Progress helps us to solve the challenges of our time. At the same time, (technological) progress is not possible without people. On the contrary: People with their special talents are becoming increasingly important.
Therefore, as PwC Austria’s leadership team, we place our focused and positive cooperation at the very top on our agenda and work together with around 1,500 talented employees on the most pressing challenges of our time.
It’s often worth looking back to see the path ahead even more clearly. I fondly remember where it all began: in a family business that produced balloons. There, I learned early on that sustainable success always starts with people—with trust, responsibility, and values that provide direction. Especially when so much is changing.
As the re-elected CEO of PwC Austria, I want to continue to uphold this very compass: empowering people, building trust, and looking toward the future together.
And if I could give my 6-year-old self a piece of advice today, it would be this:
No matter where your journey takes you: never forget where you came from, and stay true to your values.
Childhood experiences often shape us more deeply than we realized at the time.
Learning to ride a bike taught me early on that balance isn’t achieved while standing still, but through movement. Sometimes it takes courage, sometimes a tailwind—and sometimes the willingness to get back up after a fall and keep riding.
This idea continues to guide me today in my role as Head of Tax Advisory at PwC Austria. After all, the world of taxation is constantly changing: new regulations, technological developments, and evolving client needs demand adaptability and foresight.
And if I could give my younger self some advice today, it would be:
Go for it! And if you fall, don't give up, keep at it.
Even as a young Werner, I already knew this: To truly understand a soccer game, it’s not enough to just follow the ball—you have to keep an eye on the entire field.
It’s a mindset that has stayed with me to this day, even in my role as Head of Audit at PwC Austria. After all, in assurance, too, it’s about recognizing connections, identifying risks early on, and making well-founded assessments based on that. An eye for the big picture, team spirit, and a passion for what you do—all of these matter just as much on the field as they do in professional life.
And if I could give my younger self some advice today, it would be:
Whether it's a soccer career or a completely different path – whatever you choose to do, enjoy it.
Taking on a new role always means showing courage and breaking new ground.
That’s how it was back then on my first day of school, and that’s how it is today in my new role as head of management consulting at PwC Austria. New chapters bring questions, responsibilities, and change. Above all, though, they open up opportunities: to learn, to shape the future, and to grow together with others.
And if I could give my “school-age self” some advice today, it would be:
A new chapter in life is something special. Dream big, be brave, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
As a child, I wanted to be a soccer player, a musician, or a banker. Three very different careers, and yet they have a lot in common with what I do today: discipline, tactics, a knack for striking the right note, and an interest in economic success.
These are qualities that have always defined me, and I want to carry them forward in my new role as Clients & Markets Leader at PwC Austria. Because whether on the soccer field, in music, or in the marketplace, it’s all about recognizing opportunities, bringing people together, and making an impact as a team.
Looking back, I would therefore tell my younger self:
Stay hungry, but stay humble: You’re advancing in your career because you’re hardworking. Never forget where you came from. And: A good leader doesn’t make themselves shine – they make others shine.
Music has always been an important part of my life. It has taught me to listen carefully and set the pace at just the right moment.
Whether on stage or in a company, it’s all about bringing together many different voices, contributions, and perspectives to create a harmonious whole. That’s exactly what defines my role as COO at PwC Austria: bringing processes, people, and decisions into harmony and achieving impact together.
The young Thomas, who pushes the envelope, and the Thomas of today, who sets the pace with his experience: To me, that's a powerful combination.
